JEFFERSON —
Sheriff William Johnson’s request for a debate with his political opponent, Chief G. Randy Gentry of the Andover Police Department, has been declined.
Johnson made his request to Gentry in a certified letter dated Aug. 17. As of late Tuesday, the sheriff had not heard back from Gentry. However, Gentry’s treasurer issued a press release late Tuesday afternoon.
“In response to the letter dated August 17, 2012, from William R. Johnson, I respectfully decline his request. As a Police Officer with more than 20 years of law enforcement experience, I have no desire to participate in a debate that has been organized and orchestrated by my opponent.
“There are three (3) debates scheduled by the Independent League of Women Voters. I will be more than happy to have a debate with Mr. Johnson and answer any questions the voters may have at these venues.
“An independent and neutral platform will provide information about both candidates so that the public can make a better-informed decision with regards to the upcoming election.”
Johnson’s letter requested that Gentry participate in an open debate dedicated to the sheriff’s race.
“I feel this debate on our stance on issues, work record, accomplishments and ideas will be beneficial for the Citizens of Ashtabula County,” Johnson wrote in the letter.
He proposed Kent State University-Ashtabula as the site of the two-hour debate, which would be moderated by an independent person agreed upon by both candidates. Johnson presented four dates in October as possibilities. He said he would foot the bill for renting the auditorium, so Gentry would not have any financial investment in the event.
The sheriff also requested data from the Andover Police Department pertaining to budget/line items, paid manpower schedules, commissioned officers, number of arrests and charges, and the number of reports filed regarding various crimes.
The press release from Gentry’s campaign treasurer did not mention that request. Phone calls placed to Gentry’s cell phone and office number were not returned.
