Beach Bash raises money for G.O. Ministries

ASHTABULA — Kim Barks, 52, wanted to see if “she still had it.”

“Apparently I do,” she said.

Saturday afternoon, Barks, who is the mother six and grandmother of seven, entered the hula hoop contest at the Beach Bash at Walnut Beach.

And she won.

“This is the first time I entered and I beat the 14-year-old who was the winner for the last four years,” said Barks, who received a trophy for her accomplishment.

The Beach Bash has been held since 2007, when Chuck Oliver and his band, The Dizzy Nurses, organized the event to raise money for charity. The beneficiary of this year’s event is G.O. Ministries, which needs both operating funds and money to create new programs and renovate its Station Avenue building. Oliver hoped to raise at least $1,000 for that work.

The Ashtabula native selected G.O. because he went to school with one of the young men who works there and the band values the ministry’s work.

Money is raised by selling commemorative T-shirts, charging an entry fee for the corn hole competition and selling items donated by sponsors.

Oliver, who spent the afternoon juggling his duties as a band member and event coordinator, said the heat cut into the crowd and made them less likely to participate in some of the activities, such entering the hula hoop contest or chasing an 8-foot beach ball.

“The ball keeps blowing down the beach and we have go out and chase it,” he said.
