Geneva schools construction projects moving forward

GENEVA — Water drips from the melting icicles at the new Geneva Middle School and Geneva Platt R. Spencer Elementary construction sites, adding to the mud puddles and piles of slushy snow.

As workers move forward with the simultaneous construction projects — one on Sherman Street and the other on Austin Road — the Geneva Board of Education is creating a contingency plan for middle school students, Geneva Superintendent Mary Zappitelli said.

“We know now that the (middle school) building will not be completed in August as planned,” Zappitelli said. “We have a contingency plan for all middle school students because the project is running a little behind schedule.”

Zappitelli said eighth grade students will begin the 2010-2011 school year in the partially completed new building.

“We will make every safety precaution necessary for the students to occupy that building,” she said.

The sixth and seventh grade students will begin the school year in the current building until the new building is ready, Zappitelli said. “This will take a lot of careful thinking and planning. The buildings will share resources.”

Zappitelli said many factors contributed to the delay in the middle school timeline.

“I can’t put the blame on any one reason,” she said. “Sometimes delays and problems are part of construction projects.”

Zappitelli said the board of education is working to keep parents informed about the building’s progress.

“We will hold meetings and get the information out to the parents as it becomes available,” she said.

The Geneva Platt R. Spencer Elementary, which will consolidate the Geneva and Platt R. Spencer elementary schools, is on schedule and will be ready for students in August, Zappitelli said.

“Things are on schedule and going smoothly,” she said. “The building will be ready on time.”

Engineering has been completed for the new Austinburg Elementary and Cork Elementary buildings, which will be constructed next to or behind the existing buildings.

“The bids for those schools will go out in the spring,” Zappitelli said, “and both will open in 2011.”
