Illuminating Company crews were busy Wednesday trying to restore power to customers who lost service when trees and limbs fell on power lines during a sudden storm Tuesday night, according to reports.
A huge tree pushed aside by strong winds fell across Lake Road opposite the former Conneaut Shores golf course, near Whitney Road, around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, snagging wires and damaging nearby utility poles. Lake Road was closed until the tree and wires could be removed. Firefighters cleared the scene around 3 a.m.
Large limbs also fell in other north Conneaut neighborhoods, pulling electric wires from houses, firefighters said. A report on power outages found at the FirstEnergy Website indicated 42 customers were without power in Ashtabula County, and it’s believed the majority were found in the Conneaut area.
Firefighters said the stormed swooped in from Lake Erie around 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday storm was part of a front that brought heavy rain to the region after many days of very dry conditions.
Meanwhile, hot weather was suspected of disrupting a transformer that caused a power outage in the Ashtabula Harbor area Wednesday afternoon. An unknown number of customers were affected.
The bumpy weather also ushered in what is expected to be a very hot and steamy post-holiday weekend in Ashtabula County. Temperatures, accompanied by high humidity, could approach the mid-90s today through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. Rain and storms could return Saturday, forecasters say.
Temperatures will begin to moderate on Sunday, with highs dipping to the low 80s. By Tuesday, temperatures will be in the upper 70s, according to the NWS.
