Stolen Ashtabula Township truck leads cops to drug stash

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — An Ashtabula Township cemetery employee who police said took a township vehicle without permission Saturday afternoon to investigate a family matter left behind a lunch bag that contained drugs and drug paraphernalia, sheriff deputies said.

Charges are pending against a 43-year-old Ashtabula man, deputies said.

The incident began Saturday afternoon, when a township trustee was informed by the Ashtabula Police Department that a pickup truck registered to the township was found in the city’s Bonniewood housing development. Authorities quickly traced the vehicle to a cemetery worker assigned to work a burial at Edgewood Cemetery on State Road.

Deputies learned the man was in the custody of Ashtabula police. Contacted at the police station, the suspect said he had received a phone call that day advising him his 16-year-old daughter was involved with a 19-year-old man. Enraged, the suspect took the nearest vehicle he could find — the township’s pickup truck — to track down the story.

He left behind a lunch bag that deputies learned contained marijuana, rolling papers and other drug-related paraphernalia, along with empty liquor bottles, deputies said. The suspect he was not in his right mind when he got the call about his daughter and apologized profusely for his actions.

The man is looking at drug and theft charges, deputies said.
