City to sell surplus vehicles, equipment

ASHTABULA — The big old tires on the 1996 Mack garbage truck roll with memories — up and down city streets, endless hours of picking up resident’s trash.

Where many garbage trucks have gone to the big junkyard in the sky, this truck is going on the auction block, along with 14 other surplus vehicles and equipment.

The date and time will be announced in the newspaper, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

“People will submit sealed bids,” he said. “The equipment will be available for view beforehand.”

The vehicles and equipment include: Two 2000, and a 2002, and a 2006 Crown Victoria’s,  a1996 Ford Ranger, a 2004 Chevy Impala, a 1999 Dodge 1-ton truck, a 1995 John Deere brush hog, a 1973 John Deere loader, a JLG electric ladder man lift, a Hudson Brothers equipment trailer, a medium-duty snow blade, a 10-foot Schmidt loader blade and a 1999 Chevy Blazer.

Timonere asked City Council for an ordinance Monday night to place out to bid the city’s surplus vehicles and equipment. Council granted his request.

Some of the items have more value than others, he said. The idea is maximize taxpayer dollars.

City Solicitor Michael Franklin will have the ordinance ready by the next regular City Council meeting, slated for 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at City Hall.
