Adults get their own library reading program

CONNEAUT — Organized summer reading programs aren’t just for kids, as the Conneaut Public Library hopes to prove over the coming weeks.

A first for the city — and possibly Ashtabula County — the local library has a pair of Cleveland Indians tickets waiting for 25 adults who complete a weekly list of fun “assignments,” said Kathy Pape, executive director. The tasks are geared to alerting adults to all the services the library can offer, she said.

The adult program falls under the “Dream Big READ!” umbrella of activities that get under way this month at the library.

“We want to make sure our program has something for everyone,” Pape said. “It’s becoming a family event. There’s a lot of family interaction going on.”

A highlight of the adult program will be a July 26 discussion with Pat Griswold, owner of Pizzi’s Cafe who has also done marketing work in South America, Asia and Africa. “Bringing in somebody local helped us create an adult component to our program,” Pape said.

Over the summer, participants will get points for checking out books, audio books/books on MP3, magazines and DVDs; reading a book in an unfamiliar genre; and introducing someone new to the library and signing them up for a library card. Once all the challenges have been met, the successful person will get two tickets to see the Indians play on Sept. 2.

Participation is limited to 25 people, Pape said. Contact the library for more registration information.

Registration has already begun for the library’s summer youth programs, which are geared to kids from kindergarten to grade 5. A special Pollywog Program is available for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Readers will travel into the “Magic Meadow” and the “Fantasy Forest” to hear stories about the moon, stars, mythical beasts and creatures of the night as they sit around a “campfire.” Music, poetry, games, puppet skits and shadow plays are part of the program.

Registration continues through June 15 for both programs. The programs wrap up Aug. 3 with the “Follow Your Dreams” family picnic at the Conneaut Human Resources Center, 327 Mill St. Professional musician Bill Pate will help participants write, perform and record their own songs.

SUMMER SCIENCE ACADEMY

The Conneaut library is participating in the “Summer Science Academy” program for kids ages 8-14 that also involves other libraries around the county. The program is sponsored by The Morrison Foundation.

On June 13, the library will host one of “Science in Motion” segments, which will explore the concepts of motion discovered more than 300 years ago by Sir Isaac Newton. On June 20, “Robotics” will be the topic of a program that includes the construction of two simple robots. Both programs start at 3:30 p.m.

Pre-registration required because space is limited to 20 youngsters.
