Ashtabula BOE hires familiar face to lead

Patrick Colucci is new superintendent for Ashtabula Area City Schools

ASHTABULA — Patrick Colucci will be the next superintendent for Ashtabula Area City Schools.

The acting superintendent was unanimously approved by the school board after a lengthy discussion at a special meeting Thursday night. He will officially begin his new duties Monday. Colucci is replacing Joseph Donatone, who retired Jan. 1.

Colucci, an Ashtabula native and 1982 graduate of Harbor High School, has been with the school district for 22 years. He most recently has served as assistant superintendent.

“It’s extremely exciting,” he said. “I have been a teacher, coach, principal, assistant principal, junior high athletic director .... it’s been amazing.”

Colucci said his wife, April, and children, Anna, and, P.J., as well as his parents, Gail and Ernie Colucci, have been a great support to him.

In 1990, Colucci graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s in education. He went on to earn a master’s degree in 1996 from Ashland University and later earned a superintendent’s license.

His immediate goals will be to work with the community to build united partnerships.

“We have a dedicated group of administrators, teaching staff and support staff,” he said. “We will continue to move our schools towards excellence.”

His new salary will be $98,000.

John Rubesich, superintendent of the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center, said the board originally planned to post the job March 1, while Colucci was at the helm as acting superintendent. But, recently, the school board talked of suspending the superintendent search and ask Colucci if he was interested in the job.

“Over the past 1 1/2 months, they have seen him in action; they are very impressed with him after Joe (Donatone) left,” Rubesich said. “He loves the students, he loves what he’s doing, so it’s natural for him to be in the position.”

Rubesich said he’s pleased with the decision.

“It’s going to be a smooth transition for all the superintendents in the county,” he said.
