A pre-Christmas crime spree recently came to light partly because of the pettiest of thefts — a chicken sandwich swiped from a local convenience store, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.
Charges are pending against a 30-year-old Tallmadge woman who freely admitted her role in a wave of thefts, including mail and packages pinched from porches, as well as a charity scam that began last fall and continued up through the holidays, deputies said. The woman’s 33-year-old boyfriend, from Stow, may also be implicated, as well as others, according to a report.
The pair’s role in the alleged thievery began early last week, when a deputy pulled over a vehicle in Ashtabula Township for having excessively dark window tint. While talking to the occupants, the deputy suspected a woman in the vehicle may have stolen two chicken-wrap sandwiches from a nearby convenience store two days earlier. The woman admitted filching the food, even adding the sandwiches “tasted very good,” the deputy said.
The vehicle ultimately had to be towed because of the window tint infraction, and while taking inventory of the vehicle contents found a hat reported stolen Dec. 27, from a store in the Ashtabula Towne Square, deputies said. A purse was taken at the same time, according to a report.
Other items reported stolen in recent weeks were found in the vehicle, including a check written by a woman that investigators suspect was part of a bogus American Cancer Society donation scam the woman apparently operated in the area. The woman also said she and friends took packages placed on front porches of homes by delivery people, including a stretch of houses on Dickenson Road in Ashtabula Township. The team also robbed mailboxes in search of Christmas cards that contained cash, the woman said.
The packages were taken to a garage on Union Avenue in Ashtabula, according to a report. Deputies visited the address and given permission to search. Inside the deputies found packing material, mailing labels and a number of items believed to have been stolen.
