KINGSVILLE — Ashtabula County Animal Protective League workers have seen 48 cats go to good homes in the last two weeks, but they are still up to their eyeballs in paws, claws and tails, APL board president Diane Carr said.
“We still have about 25 cats of adaptable age at this time,” Carr said. “But I’d say the cat adoption drive has been a huge success.”
In a desperate attempt to lower the shelter’s cat population, the APL is accepting donations in lieu of the regular adoption fee. If the cats aren’t adopted by the end of the month, Carr said the APL will consider euthanasia.
The shelter started the month with 70 cats, all spayed/neutered and vaccinated.
Carr said adopters helped the shelter financially as they took home a new furry friend.
“People have made nice contributions and many have taken more than one cat and we did several nice dog adoptions as well,” Carr said. “People were great. The lines were long and they still waited.”
Carr said the shelter’s door goes both ways and more and more animals are being admitted to the shelter each day.
“We have appointments scheduled twice a week through October for more animals to be turned in to the shelter besides what the dog wardens bring us,” Carr said.
Carr said the APL board of directors set a 70-cat limit for the shelter, and the cat numbers have been climbing steadily all summer.
The APL also has more than 100 dogs at the shelter, Carr said.
For more information on APL cats and dogs visit www.petfinder.com or stop in at the shelter, located at 5970 Green Road. The Green Road shelter is open Monday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The APL Mall Adoption Center is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Saturday.
The Conneaut Eagles 408 will sponsor a bar walk to benefit the shelter on Saturday. The “Crawl For Critters” will begin at 11 a.m. at the Moose Lodge 472. The group will walk to the Golden Anchor, Bottom Line, Bruce’s Lakeview, Kighty’s Pizzi’s, Trackside, Chestnut Street Cafe, American Legion, Mark’s Lounge, Rainbow and end at the Conneaut Eagles.
A minimum $10 donation is required for the walk, though walkers can collect contributions from sponsors and list a pledge sheet.
For more information on the Crawl for Critters, call 593-4408 or (814) 572-6133.
Business sponsors are needed for the annual Boo Wow Walk, which will be held Oct. 17 at Maple Ridge Golf Course in Austinburg Township. The walk will include trick-or-treating for dogs, face painting for people, doggie toenail clipping, a business fair, and the costume contest. Top pledge earners win a 42-inch flat screen TV, a portable GPS system or a digital picture frame. Prizes will be offered to 15th place.
The event will also be the focus of a documentary DVD, which will be available in February. Pre-orders for the DVD will be taken at the walk.
For more information on walk registration or sponsorship, call Gitta Racinskas at (440) 466-3966.
The semi-annual APL Spay-ghetti Dinner will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Madison Township. The purpose of the fundraiser is to pay for the spay and neuter of shelter animals.
Tickets are $8 and includes spaghetti, salad, rolls and butter. Tickets are limited to 200.
