Buckeye BOE addresses multiple personnel issues

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — The Buckeye Local Board of Education continued its celebration of the district’s excellent rating on the state report card by receiving several commendations at its meeting Wednesday.

Ashtabula Township Trustees Steve McClure and Bambi Paulchel presented the board with a recognition of the achievement, and Superintendent Nancy Williams presented recognitions from the State Board of Education, U.S. House of Representatives, Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate.

Williams said banners declaring the district as excellent are going up at the four school buildings, as well. She said the district’s rating, which marked the first time an Ashtabula County school district has achieved excellent, is an “external validation of all the hard work” that students and staff have done.

Wednesday’s meeting was held at Ridgeview Elementary, which also achieved an excellent rating on the building level. Principal Mary Balmford and several teachers presented an overview of their “road to excellence.” Balmford said the strategies include “gradual release of responsibility” in the core instruction process. The four-step process involves modeling a concept, doing shared practice with the student, overseeing guided practice and then handing off independent practice.

Wednesday’s agenda dealt mainly with personnel matters. The board granted family medical leave to three teachers: Nicole DuFour (Edgewood), Abby Kauppila (Ridgeview) and Katie Measel (Kingsville). A change in contract for Judy Mudd, a school nurse, was approved. Mudd moves from .8125 time to full time.

The board appointed David Pykare as a physical education teacher at Braden and Ridgeview. He received a one-year limited contract for 77.5 days.

The board also hired the following tutors: John Scarniench, Beth Simpson, Bonnie Bernato, Shannon DeCamillo, April Volpone, Jeannie Jyurovat, Stacey Webb, Aime Canter, Lois Graff and Julie Simmons. Karl Williamson and Greg Stolfer were hired as Saturday detention monitors.

Under extracurricular and special fee assignments, Laura Buckius was hired as adviser for both the freshman and sophomore classes. Steve Hill was hired as assistant girls basketball coach and Greg Stolfer as head wrestling coach. Al Goodwin was hired as assistant girls basketball coach for the eighth grade.

The board also approved the appointments of Elizabeth Cerveny, assistant girls soccer coach, junior varsity; Kathleen Pape, head cheerleading coach; Bill Crawford, assistant boys basketball coach, eighth grade; Wes Cleveland, assistant wrestling coach, junior varsity; Mike Greenlief, assistant wrestling coach, grades seven and eight; and Nora Giangola, musical director for the Edgewood spring musical.

The board accepted the resignation of Dawn Lilja, assistant junior varsity cheerleading coach.

Several changes were made to the board’s meeting schedule for the coming months. In addition to the Oct. 18 meeting, the board will hold a 6 p.m. work session/special meeting to discuss and adopt the five-year forecast on Oct. 25. The board also moved its November meeting date to the 22nd.
