GENEVA —
University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center was named one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, the leading accrediting body of American health care organizations. The full-service community hospital was recognized for the second year in a row for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes.
UH Geneva Medical Center is one of only 620 hospitals in the United States to earn the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures. The rating is based on accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2011 calendar year. The hospital’s latest recognition is for its achievement on measure sets for pneumonia care and surgical care.
The list of Top Performers increased 50 percent compared to its debut last year when 405 hospitals were recognized. UH Geneva Medical Center is one of only 244 hospitals that achieved the national distinction two years in a row.
Each hospital named as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures met two 95-percent performance thresholds. First, each hospital achieved performance of 95 percent or above on a single, composite score that encompassed all accountability measures reported. This included measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. Second, each hospital met or exceeded 95-percent performance on every individual accountability measure reported, excluding any measures with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients. A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities. Examples of these practices include giving aspirin to heart attack patients at arrival, administering antibiotics one hour before surgery and providing a home management plan for children with asthma.
“The University Hospitals Quality Institute is extremely proud of UH Geneva Medical Center for this recognition of their efforts to continuously improve patient safety and quality,” said William Annable, MD, Chief Quality Officer and Director, UH Quality Institute, University Hospitals. “The facility achieving this honor two years in a row speaks to its strong commitment to this effort. UH Geneva Medical Center has a superior team that truly cares about its patients.”
Richard Hanson, President, UH Community Hospitals and Ambulatory Network added, “At UH Geneva Medical Center, the focus is always on the patient. The facility has always been a leader in Quality and Patient Satisfaction results, not only within University Hospitals but also in Ashtabula County.”
“Our goal is to lead by being transparent and accountable,” said Amitabh Goel, MD, Chief Medical Officer, UH Geneva Medical Center. “We are always trying to better ourselves so that we can continue to provide the highest quality care to our patients.”
"Our patients know we are focused on them as individuals,” said Christine Tredent, Director of Quality, UH Geneva Medical Center. “Receiving this recognition shows that we work hard as a team in following national guidelines for best practices. It doesn't get any better than that."
“We understand that what matters most to our patients is safe, effective care,” said Robert G. David, President, UH Geneva Medical Center. “That’s why we have made a commitment to accreditation and to positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes. UH Geneva Medical Center is proud to be on the list of The Joint Commission’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures.”
