Free trees being offered to Madison residents

MADISON — The Madison Schools, Madison Garden Club (MGC) and the Madison Community Improve-ment Corporation (MCIC) are working together to find homes for more than 100 trees located on Middle Ridge Road at the site of the new middle school.

Kay Kane, tree committee chairman for the Madison Garden Club, said the trees are quality nursery stock from the former Warner Nursery. She said the school now owns the property, which will soon be excavated, and the trees need to be removed.

“These trees are free and valued at about $1,000,” Kane said. “The only cost to the residents is for transporting and planting.”

The Red Maple and River Birch trees are approximately 15 years old and 15 feet high.

“This is an instant tree that provides shade,” Kane said. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Because of the weight and height, a professional landscaper was hired to help with the project.

Briar Rose Nursery in Grand River will remove the trees from the site and replant the trees as needed up to a 5 mile radius. She said cost to transport a tree is $275. For distances any further, residents will have to contact the landscaper.

In the spring, Kane said 20 Red Maple trees were planted along Lake Road, each with their own yellow ribbon. She said the ribbons were used to spark interest in the program and to get people asking questions.

“All the trees have done well in spite of the drought,” Kane said.

So far, 35 trees have found new homes and they are continuing to take orders through September to plant in October, which she said is the best time for planting trees.

She encourages people to take a drive down Lake Road to see the trees.

For more information on the trees contact Kay Kane, MGC, 428-5884 or Sue Woodworth, MCIC, at 440-661-1245.
