ASHTABULA —
A Thursday police raid in Ashtabula resulted in three arrest, drugs, paraphernalia and — as an unexpected bonus — a little marijuana farm right next door, officers said.
The raid was the result of a four-month investigation conducted by TAG Law Enforcement Task Force, Ashtabula Police Department, Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, said TAG Detective Greg Leonhard.
Officers served a search warrant at 5531 Washington Ave., Leonhard said. Arrested at the scene were:
* Michael Manis, 29, charged with charged with possessing weapons under a disability
* Daryl Rose, 27, charged with of possession of more than 200 grams of methamphetamine, possession of chemicals to manufacture drugs and illegal assembly of chemicals to manufacture a dangerous drug
* Lucas Dragon, 29, failure to appear on an aggravated disorderly conduct charge
Three small children in the house are now in the care of Ashtabula County Children Services, Leonhard said. On the premises police found a meth lab, heroin, pills, meth-making supplies, ammunition, drug paraphernalia and “unknown substances” that will be analyzed by BCI, he said.
“We were pretty pleased with the results,” Leonhard said.
While waiting for a search warrant from Ashtabula Municipal Court, officers were made aware of marijuana growing on property next door, Leonhard said. Several plants, standing upwards of six feet tall, were seized. Charges are pending against the occupant, Leonhard said.
The investigation resulted from complaints made to local authorities, Leonhard said. “Calls come into us and the APD tip line,” he said.
There’s no shortage of properties around the county to investigate, which makes collaboration between law enforcement agencies more important then ever, Leonhard said.
“There are more drug houses than people to work them,” he said. “There is a small number of people to work (these cases), so we need to depend on each other.”
People seemed to appreciate Thursday’s action. Leonhard said he was told when the arrests were made, neighbors stood on their porches and applauded.
“This house has been a sore point for a period of time,” he said.
