Madison candy store thief has a change of heart

MADISON — The Red Berry Candy shop on Hubbard Road received a shocking surprise after finding that someone had left them an overnight deposit.

Candy Nichols, owner of Red Berry, said her husband, Jerry, was driving to church two Sundays ago and stopped by the shop to pick something up.  As he opened the doors, he noticed an envelope that had been shoved through the door, with the handwritten words, “To Red Berry.” He opened the envelope to find $120 in cash and no explanation for the money. He then called his wife to ask about the money.

“We had no idea where it came from,” Nichols said. “We waited two weeks to see if anyone would come forward to tell us why this money was left.”

In that two week period, no one came forward.  Each family member had their own idea on where the money came from, but said nothing to each other.

In June, a thief gained entrance to the candy shop taking money and candy and leaving behind a sticky mess. It was estimated that $120 was taken in cash and candy.

The family believes that the person involved in that incident had a change of heart and wanted to make restitution for what was taken.

“You don’t hear of this happening to often,” she said. “It was a nice surprise.”

Nichols has since decided that during the Christmas season, she will add a Christmas tree outside the shop decorated with only one bulb.

“This bulb will be dedicated to whoever took the candy and money,” she said, “And on that bulb I will write — You are forgiven.”

Nichols said she does not expect anyone to come forward nor does she need them to because what they did wrong they made right.

“It’s never too late to wipe the slate clean,” Nichols said. “I’m proud of whoever it was.”
