October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we want your support! Homesafe, Ashtabula County’s Domestic Violence Shelter, is offering a variety of ways the community can show support against the fight to end domestic violence. During the month of October, participate in Homesafe’s Purple Ribbon Campaign, attend the Walk Against Abuse, or visit your local library to receive educational material. To participate in Homesafe’s Purple Ribbon Campaign, display a purple ribbon at your residence, place of business, organization, or any place visible to show there is no place for domestic violence in homes, neighborhoods, workplaces or schools. Send Homesafe a picture and contact information and be entered into a drawing to receive light breakfast items and coffee delivered to your home or place of business! Homesafe will also provide a discussion on awareness. Send your picture AND contact information by Oct. 31 to: PO Box 702, Ashtabula 44005. Please contact Homesafe with questions at 992-2727.
To participate in Homesafe’s Walk Against Abuse, join others 6 p.m. Wednesday at Kent State University-Ashtabula to walk the grounds of the campus to show there is no place for violence in our communities. In the event of rain, the activities will be held in the auditorium and gymnasium. Listen to guest speakers Jim Timonere, City Manager-Ashtabula; Suzanne Lyons and Mallory Babika, both survivors of domestic and dating violence. Visit with other community agencies: Beatitude House — A House of Blessing, Catholic Charities, Community Action, and Victims of Crime. Stay for light refreshments provided by the Zonta Club of Ashtabula. Remember to wear purple!
Homesafe will display educational information about domestic violence at local libraries. Homesafe will be at Andover Public Library today and Moneay; Harbor-Topky Memorial Library Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; Ashtabula County District Library Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Kingsville Public Library Oct. 22, 23 and 24 and Geneva Library Oct. 25 through Oct. 29.

When the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 leveled Missouri, the shock waves were strong enough to ring church bells in New York and break windows in Washington D.C. People in southern Ohio fled from their cabins. Closer to the quake’s epicenter, earth liquefied, sand volcanoes popped up and rivers appeared to run backwards. It was the first recorded magnitude 8.0 earthquake in North America, and to this day the strongest. Seismologists agree it could happen again. Some believe it could happen any time within the next 50 years.
