With a little luck and help from his grandfather, Daniel Garcia transformed a scraggly cabbage plant from a field trip into a 9-pounds of cruciferous leaves.
“When I was in third grade last year, they gave us plants while were at the Holden Arboretum on a field trip,” says Daniel, 9. “My plant started to die, so I started watering it every day. And then it started to grow bigger, and I had to put it in a large pot.”
When the plant finally produced a head, Daniel took it to his grandfather, Francisco Nater, who lives on Jefferson Road in Ashtabula.
Francisco has a garden and he agreed to care for the plant during the summer.
“In two weeks, it started to get big,” Daniel said.
The cabbage head grew and grew, and during a cookout in August, Francisco and Daniel harvested the monstrous head. Daniel said it weighed more than 11 pounds with all the extra leaves on it; a little more than 9 pounds when dressed.
He says he doesn’t know what his grandfather did to make the plant grow like that, but he obviously doted on the special plant.
The oblong head has resided in the family’s refrigerator ever since harvest, but Daniel has plans for it — cabbage rolls — the perfect ending for a third-grade field trip.
