Conneaut speeder faces many charges

CONNEAUT —  A city man faces criminal and traffic charges after he drove through stop signs and red lights to avoid a police pursuit early Wednesday morning, according to a report.

Idris Sistrunk, 40, 159 Poplar St., will be arraigned next week in Conneaut Municipal Court on charges of failure to comply, resisting arrest and criminal trespass, in addition to numerous traffic charges, a court spokeswoman said Friday.

Police on patrol around 1:26 a.m. saw a vehicle drive through a stop sign at Depot and Mill streets. When an officer responded, the vehicle accelerated, bypassing traffic control devices on numerous residential side streets near the downtown district, police said. The vehicle was traveling fast enough to vault a Norfolk Southern Railway crossing on Harbor Street, creating sparks from the undercarriage when it landed on the other side.

After zig-zagging through more streets, the driver — later identified as Sistrunk — abandoned the vehicle on Beaver Street. A resident in the area alerted to the chase grabbed and restrained Sistrunk as he was running through the man’s back yard, police said.

Asked the reason he fled police, Sistrunk said “I don’t have a license,” according to a report.
