ASHTABULA —
The Ashtabula City School Board will meet Monday to discuss placing the emergency property tax levy on the November ballot.
The board passed a resolution June 20 to put a 6.4-mill levy on the Nov. 6 ballot, but it hasn’t decided for sure to put it before voters again after it failed Aug. 7, Superintendent Joseph Donatone said.
The school board did all of the procedural work for the November election, in case the measure failed, he said.
The levy went down by 587 votes; consequently, the board will hold a special meeting at 6:15 p.m. Monday at Lakeside High School to discuss future levies. The public is invited to attend.
The five-year levy will raise $2.7 million for the school district, if passed, officials have said.
The board had lowered the millage from the previous 6.8 mills in March 2012, which also failed by about 500 votes, Donatone has said.
With no levy and state money dwindling, the board has discussed how to make up a $322,000 deficit this year, and a $1.8 million deficit next year, he said.
The student activity fee or “Pay to Play” remains in effect for the 2012-13 school year; a reduction in force remains in effect, and French has been eliminated from the foreign language curriculum at the high school.
Donatone said the levy to be discussed Monday is to support the operating expen-ses of the district. This includes everything from per-sonnel costs to utility bills.
