Christmas dog, puppies will be at APL storefront

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Diane Carr tried her best.

Crouched down to eye level with a tiny puppy, Carr kissed and clucked and clicked and whistled, but no matter how hard she tried, she could not get 10 puppies and their mother to look at the camera at the same time.

“I finally just gave up,” she said. “The puppies never sit still and Mary turns her head every time I take a picture. What a bunch!”

Carr, the APL board president, became the foster parent to Mary the Christmas dog and her 10 puppies when the pregnant German shepherd had her litter en route from a kill shelter to a the Pets Alive rescue shelter in New York. The APL agreed to take the dogs and provide their necessary veterinarian care so they wouldn’t have to travel in their delicate conditions.

Now the shelter will host a “Meet Mary” party at the Ashtabula Towne Square shelter Saturday, inviting people to take a look at Mary and her pups and consider adopting them.

The puppies will be at the APL storefront from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Prospective adopters can fill out applications for the puppies. The puppy adoption fee is $125 and includes spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations.

“We are fortunate with Mary’s litter because any puppies we can’t find homes for here in Ashtabula County, the rescue shelter will take,” Carr said. “But the support of the people of Ashtabula County made the rescue possible, so we feel they should be able to see and potentially adopt from this litter.”

Carr said the puppies are all healthy and happy. Most are named after Santa’s reindeer.

“Mary is a wonderful dog,” Carr said. “She is very friendly, good with other dogs and she is housebroken. It is amazing that a shelter was going to put her down, she is just such a nice dog.”

Carr said Mary is a shepherd mix dog. The puppies are described as “little mutts.” Mary is a medium-sized dog, and Carr doesn’t believe the puppies will grow any bigger than their mother.

“We hope people will come out to see the puppies, because they will just fall in love with them. They are so cute,” Carr said. “They are our Christmas story, and they deserve the best homes possible.”

“We also believe people should be able to come in and see the product of their support for the APL,” she said. “We are here for the animals, but we couldn’t do it without the many people who support what we do.”
