KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — A Fox Road couple stood out in the cold Thursday night after a fire broke out in their chimney, according to a firefighter’s report.
At 7:56 p.m., the Kingsville Volunteer Fire Department was called to the home of Richard and Kathryn Szakaly, 3949 Fox Road, the report said. When firefighters arrived about 10 minutes later, they saw smoke and flames coming from the chimney, according to reports.
Once inside the split-level house, they discovered an airtight insert in family room, which had burned out through the chimney, a bedroom wall and the attic, according to the firefighter’s report.
Monroe and Sheffield Township fire departments arrived shortly thereafter to help fight the blaze.
North Kingsville Fire Department brought an ambulance and rescue personnel.
No one was injured, but firefighters had their hands full battling the blaze in the frigid single-digit temperatures. It was so cold, their gloves kept freezing, the report said.
The fire was brought under control at 9:18 p.m., and firefighters left the scene at about 11 p.m., reports show.
The home suffered smoke and water damage in two rooms, but the Szakalys are able to continue to live in it, firefighters said. The exact dollar amount of damage was not available Friday.
