A homeowner’s hunch that the criminal returns to the scene of his crime led to the apprehension of two young adults who burglarized a Route 46, New Lyme Township, residence.
The 46-year-old man noticed on Thursday that a 47-inch JVC flat-screen television worth $600 was missing from his kitchen. Additionally, two iPods valued at $200 each and a chain saw worth $1,000 were missing. But rather than report the thefts to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, he installed two motion activated game cameras, one inside and one outside.
When he arrived home four days later, he discovered that a 32-inch Vizio flat-screen TV and X-Box had been lifted from the house. A review of the pictures captured by the exterior camera provided the license plate number of the car, while interior images showed the man in action.
The plate led deputies to the Jefferson Village residence of the car’s owner and her 18-year-old daughter, the girlfriend of the 19-year-old Ravenna man. The homeowner identified the man in the images as one of his son’s friends.
The male suspect admitted to burglarizing the house on four occasions. He told the deputy that, with the exception of the most recent event, they took the items to the “hood” in Ashtabula City and sold the goods for cash, which was then used to purchase food, cigarettes, gasoline and marijuana.
The female suspect also admitted to her involvement. Each suspect faces four counts of burglary and four counts of theft. The items could not be recovered.
