SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP —
A 29-year-old Geneva man got a fat lip — and possible criminal charges — after he reportedly attempted a reconciliation with an ex-girlfriend Wednesday night, sheriff deputies said.
The incident occurred about 8 p.m. on Ninevah Road. Deputies were sent to an address after a woman reported she slugged someone who broke into her home.
Upon arrival, deputies learned the woman, 25, and her 7-year-old daughter were home alone when they heard a doorknob rattling. The woman told the daughter to hide in a bedroom, according to a report. As the door opened and a man began to step inside, the woman punched the visitor in the face, knocking him back through the entryway, deputies said.
The man, who turned out to be the woman’s ex-boyfriend, exchanged profanities with the woman before retreating to an acquaintance’s house nearby, witnesses said. Contacted at the house, the man — who deputies said was highly intoxicated — said he only wanted to make up with his ex and was prepared to pay her money he owed. The man told deputies the visit was probably a bad idea, but he wasn’t thinking straight because of the bottle of alcohol he had consumed.
Deputies are seeking burglary charges against the man.
