ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — The Buckeye Local Schools Board of Education is doing its part to bring down the county’s unemployment rate.
Tuesday evening the board hired a new social studies teacher for Edgewood Senior High School. Ryan Sardella, who has worked in the district as a tutor and, last year, taught social studies to Edgewood sophomores, was given a one-year limited contract. He has a bachelor’s plus 20 and three years of experience.
Superintendent Nancy Williams pointed to the high school’s excellent showing on the state achievement test as evidence of Sardella’s skill in the classroom.
The district also hired Shannon Dalton to teach 2.5 hours a day at Wallace H. Braden Junior High. Dalton will teach eighth-grade French and an exploratory section.
Williams said Dalton has also been hired by Geneva Area City Schools to teach French part time. The two districts coordinated scheduling of the classes Dalton will teach so she can accept both assignments.
Dalton did her student teaching in a cooperative teaching setting and has made a couple of trips to France to further enhance her command of the language and culture.
The district re-employed Holly White, a Title I teacher, who was the subject of a reduction in force action earlier this year.
White was given a one-year limited contract and will teach at Ridgeview. Williams said White’s position will be paid for with federal stimulus funds.
In other personnel action, the board accepted the resignation of Juli Meaney, school nurse, whose hours were cut by board action last month. Cathy DuFour, central call-in coordinator, is resigning effective Aug. 14; Jennifer Lovley was hired to replace her. Maria Oblak, a part-time music teacher, resigned effective July 2.
Under operational staff, the district appointed Susan Farmer, bus driver; Jennifer Lovley and Michelle Thomas, substitute secretaries; Michelle Thomas and Patricia J. Walker, substitute library aides, student monitors and crossing guards; and Michelle Thomas, substitute cafeteria.
The board went into executive session following Tuesday evening’s meeting to discuss personnel matters.
