Officer assaulted, suspect escapes

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — A Mingo Junction man escaped police custody early Friday morning after he assaulted a Geneva-on-the-Lake police officer during a fight at the Cove Niteclub, village Police Chief Tim Bruckman said Monday.

Patrick Marshall, 18, was arrested for fighting with two other man at the popular lakefront club at 2:12 a.m. Friday, police reports show.

Marshall, who Bruckman said “was at the bottom of the fight,” then assaulted village police Officer Brian Ferreri, police reports show.

Ferreri suffered a cut above his eye and a swollen cheek. He was treated at the scene for superficial wounds, Bruckman said.

Officers handcuffed and secured Marshall in the police cruiser and returned to the club to arrest Joshua Hunter, 19, of Ashtabula and Alexander Gordon, 18, of Colorado Springs, Colo., when Marshall escaped from the cruiser and took off, still handcuffed, into the night, Bruckman said.

“We believe on of his friends helped him out of the cruiser and he ran off,” Bruckman said.

Marshall, who was intoxicated, ran down the village resort “strip” to the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake, where he was staying for the weekend, police reports show.

“We knew he was staying at the lodge and we arrested him in the lobby when he showed up there,” Bruckman said.

Marshall was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer, holding false identification, underage drinking, failure to comply, and escape, Bruckman said.

He was arraigned on the charges Monday in Western County Court, court records show.

Hunter, who shoved a police officer, was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct, assaulting a police officer, underage drinking, and resisting arrest, police reports show.

Gordon, who was staying at the lodge with Marshall, was arrested for aggravated disorderly conduct, possession of drugs, underage drinking and resisting arrest, police reports show.

Hunter and Gordon will be arraigned Thursday in Western County Court, Bruckman said.

The fight and Marshall’s escape brought many police officers to the scene, including four GOTL officers, two Ohio State Highway Patrol officers, one sheriff’s deputy and two Geneva police officers, Bruckman said.
