Filthy drug house results in charges

CONNEAUT —  A house that held a methamphetamine lab in one room and human feces in another — and was home to three young children — has resulted in criminal charges against two occupants, Conneaut Municipal Court records show.

Barbara Melrose, 31, and Travis Hayford, 30, both of 351 Adams St., face charges of endangering children, permitting drug abuse and aggravated possession of drugs, the latter a felony, a court spokeswoman said Thursday. The pair are scheduled for arraignment on June 26.

The charges stem from a search of the house conducted Sunday morning by police looking for a man who reportedly put a gun to the head of his girlfriend. During the course of the search officers discovered a meth lab in the man’s room and a house in “deplorable condition with trash and pests throughout,” police said in a report. One room was “covered” in human waste, officers said in the report.

Police also found three children, all under the age of 3, on the premises. The children were picked up by their grandparents, officers said.

Melrose and Hayford, described in the police report as girlfriend and boyfriend, denied knowledge of the meth lab in the man’s room, officers said. The man, John Shaver, faces drug charges in the matter.

Police, looking for a weapon related to the Shaver case, secured a search warrant to examine the premises after Hayford denied officers entry into the house. It is believed Hayford and Melrose have vacated the Adams Street house, officials have said.
