New St. John hosts open house Oct. 2

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — The paint is fresh and the students are excited about the new St. John School on Depot Road.

Now they get to show off their new classrooms at a public open house from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 2, said school communications officer Patti Andersen.

“This is a community open house and building blessing so people can come in and see all the exciting new things happening at Saint John School,” she said.

The event will include a blessing of the school by Bishop George Murry, a presentation of arms, a prayer service and a punch and cookie reception from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Previously known as Ss. John and Paul High School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the grade school and high school consolidated at the former Saybrook Elementary on Depot Road, which was purchased from the Ashtabula Area City School District last year.

Andersen said workers put a summer’s worth of sweat and tears into the building and the students were amazed at the new school.

“The younger kids don’t really realize the significance of the new building, but the older kids I think were a little torn between missing their old school and being excited about the new building,” she said.

The school needs another $150,000 to complete the kitchen. A new gymnasium is also needed.

Andersen said the 300-person student body is growing — numbers are up by 12 percent this year.

St. John School is accepting applications for students entering pre-school and grades K-12. The pre-school has a 3- and 4-year-old program for both two and three days a week. Kindergarten is a full-day program. Online classes are offered for high school students..
