Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is campaigning in northeast Ohio again, but this time, he’s a little closer to Ashtabula County.
Romney is scheduled to speak at 2:30 p.m. today at a rally at Lake Erie College in Painesville. More than 5,000 people are expected to attend, according to campaign officials.
Ashtabula County GOP chairman Charlie Frye said a lot of people from Ashtabula County will be there.
“Romney is picking up a lot of momentum,” Frye said. “There’s a large group of people out there working for him.”
Republican Carol Lovas, director of the Ashtabula County Board of Elections, said she won’t be able to attend today’s event because it’s so busy at work.
“But we have people from Ashtabula County that will be there,” she said. “I think the support for Romney is getting stronger. (Vice Presidential candidate) Paul Ryan is a nice addition.”
Doors will open at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center, 391 West Washington St., at 12:30 p.m., but get there early because there will be limited seating, his campaign officials said.
In addition to Romney, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman and state Auditor Dave Yost are expected to attend.
Everyone will be required to go through airport-like security and should leave personal items at home. No bags, backpacks, umbrellas, liquids or signs will be allowed inside the venue. Cameras are permitted.
After the rally at Lake Erie College, Romney plans to attend a private fundraiser at the home of Ed Crawford of Kirtland, who has hosted other Republican candidates in the past.
Frye reminds local folks to attend the Ashtabula County Republican Party’s Pathway to Victory Fundraiser tonight at the Spire Institute in Harpersfield Township. at 6:30.
