JEFFERSON —
The number two person at the Ashtabula County recorder’s office will remain in charge of the department until voters have their say this fall, officials said.
Victoria Dresnek was the choice of the county’s Democratic central committee that met Tuesday night to appoint a successor to Judith Barta, who stepped down at the end of August with more than four months left on her term. Dresnek, the department’s chief deputy recorder for 12 years, is now interim county recorder until the winner of the Nov. 6 general election takes her oath of office in early January 2013, said Duane Feher, Democrat committee chairman.
Dresnek was given the job after Barbara Schaab, the Democrat candidate for the position in November, declined the committee’s appointment, Feher said.
“Although extremely pleased with this show of confidence by the central committee, I believe the credibility of my candidacy requires that I turn down the appointment,” she said in a statement. “I made a commitment to my campaign and to the voters, and intend to see my obligation through to the election.”
Feher said he respected Schaab’s decision.
“The suddenness of (Barta’s) resignation and the closeness of the election weighed heavily on her decision,” he said. “She didn’t want any one-upmanship.”
Schaab is Austinburg Township’s fiscal officer. Her opponent is Corrie Leehan of Geneva, a Republican.
