Groups work to save Madison train depot

MADISON — Nestled between the railroad tracks in Madison Village, sits a little red train depot. Despite its weathered appearance, the depot continues to quietly welcome the many trains and vehicles as they make their way through the village.

For many people, the sagging roof and peeling paint does not take away from the charm it holds in the historic village and is a gentle reminder of a life lived so differently in Madison. The love for this building has prompted organizations to work together to preserve the little depot.

The Madison Community Improvement Corporation (MCIC) has been working with the Madison Historical Society to help preserve the building and after 18 months of discussions, Trevor Behm, president of MCIC said Norfolk and Southern Railroad has agreed to donate the building to the Historical Society for preservation.

“We are now waiting for the railroad to give us ‘the right of entry’ so we can begin the project,” Behm said. “We are hoping to start in October.”

In addition to the agreement with the railroad, he said the warehouse building behind the depot must come down.

“If we want to restore it, we have to take it down and move it to a new location,” Behm said. “It’s a liability for people to use that area. It’s just not safe — the structure itself is not safe.”

In the first phase of the project, Behm said they will be working with Tom Adams, a historical preservationist, who will begin taking the building down, piece by piece, and saving as much as he can. The material will be transferred off site.

He said Adams makes models of historical structures so he can replicate it down to every little detail. With access to wood and materials from that time period, he can replace building materials as needed when the depot is rebuilt.

Behm said, “Once rebuilt, it will be exactly how it was when first built.”

The second phase of the project will be rebuilding the depot at a new location.

“We are currently looking for a site to rebuild the depot to its original 1900’s beauty,” Behm said, “We would like to keep it in the same general area.”

Funding for this project has come from various donations. Behm said the village has committed some grant money towards the project and anyone who would like to donate to this project can do so through the MCIC web site by visiting at www.madisoncic.org.
