Charges ahead for three in Williamsfield shooting incident

WILLIAMSFIELD TOWNSHIP — An Andover man’s unwanted target practice resulted in a fight, at least one shotgun blast and charges against three men, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

No one was injured in the Monday evening incident on Otter Lane in Williamsfield, deputies said. Charges await a Williamsfield man and two Andover residents, according to a report.

Deputies were sent to Otter Lane in response to a call of a man threatening others with a firearm. The Andover man said he was firing his shotgun into a tree when a man came onto the property, began yelling and then fought with the shooter. Other people stepped in and broke up the fight, he said.

The other party gave a different story, saying the shotgun was fired extremely close to his property, making him fear for the safety of his children, deputies said. The neighbor approached the shooter to ask him to quit firing and was accosted by the man’s friends, according to a report. A fight ensued, and a second man reportedly fired a shotgun blast that kicked up dirt about three feet from the neighbor’s feet, deputies said.

Several neighbors and witnesses were interviewed by deputies and verified that the shotgun was fired at least once after the scuffle began, according to a report.

  • The earth will occasionally move under Ashtabula County

When the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 leveled Missouri, the shock waves were strong enough to ring church bells in New York and break windows in Washington D.C. People in southern Ohio fled from their cabins. Closer to the quake’s epicenter, earth liquefied, sand volcanoes popped up and rivers appeared to run backwards. It was the first recorded magnitude 8.0 earthquake in North America, and to this day the strongest. Seismologists agree it could happen again. Some believe it could happen any time within the next 50 years.
