On unfortunate baby bunnies

In this week’s “Animal Island,” (Pet Page) there was an article asking about hand-raising baby rabbits whose nests have been disturbed by lawn maintenance.

I have raised many litters of tiny bunnies that were plowed up in the field or destroyed by the lawn mower. I use a formula of canned milk and water in equal parts, then add several drops of puppy or kitty vitamins and the yolk of a soft-boiled egg. I find the smallest dolly bottle I can find, as an eyedropper seems to blob it out too fast for the little guys to manage. I have raised several litters, and the only ones I have lost were the ones who were injured so badly they couldn’t recover. I feed them every two or three hours for the first few days (and nights) until they are old enough to go onto solid food.

I kept them until they were about 4 or 5 months old, and then released them back to the wild. It takes patience and time, but it is fun and can be done.

I hope others who have been successful with the “bunny raising” will write so more of these little victims can be saved because everyone thinks it is not possible.
