“Gunner Joe” has been resurrected. For readers who are too young, this was Sen. Joe McCarthy, who crusaded on the “red scare.”
I’ll admit my belief in him until taken to task for the mass destruction he did. The Rev. Edward Everett Hale was asked to pray for the senators; his answer was, “No, I look at the senators and pray for the country.” Today the majority of the representatives of government are now cowed into fear and dare not speak anything but “political correctness.” Who can blame them, it’s self preservation, like in the days of “Gunner Joe.” Misspeak and you lose your job. Far better to follow “Big Brother’s speak” or risk the wrath of the news media.
Remember the Miss U.S.A. beauty pageant, where a so-called judge asked a so-called question. What a joke. He gave a speech about same-sex marriage and wanted the contestant to fully agree. When she unwisely answered without political correctness, “No, marriage is between a man and a woman,” the judge resorted to calling her the “B” word.
Now a business family is under full attack. They have religious views and follow these; they honor the Sabbath and stayed closed on Sunday, cost them a lot of revenue. They too misspoke failing to observe “political correctness” that in their belief marriage is a union between a man and woman.
Now they are demonized in the press with political cartoon, a mayor said they were not welcome in his city; you see he wants to keep his job as mayor. He is terrified and cowered like so many. This is “Gunner Joe” at his best, which is the worst for us, fear dominates and freedom of speech is trampled upon. Political correctness has run amok.
It is basically no one’s business how a person chooses to live his life within lawful actions. But no certain group should be able to direct anyone else in their beliefs! When society must live in such fear that the news media can ridicule anyone who expresses his stance, this is the season for “Gunner Joe.”
