The editorial opinion (7/29) on the Gun Control Debate was at least an honest attempt to offer some response to address a serious problem. But their opinion was disappointing.
Since the Beacon’s headline “MASSACRE AT THE MOVIES,” virtually every day has featured some story about a gun-related tragedy. This is a continuous every day part of our society not just headline grabbing assault weapon attacks at schools, political rallies, military bases, or movie theaters. Use cliches like “keeping cannons out of the hands of loose cannons” is an empty answer belonging on a bumper sticker next to “Guns don’t kill, people do.” The real solution is to get rid of cannons. The editors appropriately pointed out that the 2nd Amendment was written in the age of flintlocks, not AK 47’s and M-16’s or any assault weapon designed for mass destruction of life.
True, neither political party will utter a word about gun control. However, failing to point the finger for this reluctance leaves the impression that the people don’t really care. But he who shall not be named, is the National Rifle Association.
The NRA is a powerful organization with huge financial
resources to bolster their outrageous stands on gun control. The NRA even opposes the adoption of the National Arms Trade Treaty to curb the worldwide spread of firearms especially to nations that violate human rights. And no one dares present a reasonable solution. Yet solutions are not difficult unless we are satisfied with the status quo. Simply put, these weapons of mass destruction should be illegal outside of law enforcement and military defense.
The NRA remains silent after every gun related tragedy; letting their disciples hammer the mantra of the need for more concealed weapons in more public places. Gun owners are being misled by the NRA whose agenda has evolved far from its origins.
Politicians do not seem to be our representatives, but rather creatures of the power brokers. Instead, they capitulate just to get re-elected. It is time our elected officials take courage and begin to do the right thing. I don’t believe that most of us want to see a continuation of an insane proliferation of assault weapons driven by fear mongering of the NRA. If our legislators have two faces, one for us and one for themselves, then they must wear the mantle of being phonies and hypocrites.
