The recent Star Beacon story about schools in New Lyme was enjoyable. However it has become quite usual that something of importance to certain graduating classes – the omission of New Lyme High School – is being perpetuated in these stories.
I graduated from New Lyme High in 1941 and it had been called that since 1923, not Deming. It was sometime in the mid-1940s that the name was changed from New Lyme High to New Lyme/Deming, and then finally to just Deming.
We have had annual reunions since the early 1940s. When we sing our school song at these reunions, the older attendants end the song with the words, “Grand Old New Lyme High” and others in attendance sing “Grand Old Deming High.” We remain united in memories and school spirit, but the New Lyme High classes from 1923 to the mid-1940s want the correct name of their school to be in the history books.

Your editorial in the July 28 Opine section of the Star Beacon in regard to slow drivers causing accidents, while praising fast drivers, really pulled my chain, so to speak.
