I know this is a difficult time for you as you are so clearly adrift, bereft of the moorings that served you so well for so long. It may be worth mentioning that the guiding principles that made your profession so noble did not abandon you, but you them. That said, this is not the time for recrimination, but rather, restoration.
You are the most powerful organization in the world. Never forget that. As such, there is no need to persist in debasing yourselves in your quest to pander to the lowest common denominator. Let your public rise to your standards, as the lowering of yours serves no one well. Some shall be lost, but let Jerry and Maury concern themselves with those. Your temple rests on the foundation of fact and truth. The slightest deviation into opinion or surmise places you on unsuitable underpinnings. Leave politics to the politicians as they scurry to secure their own special place in hell. Secure your rightfull place in heaven with the truth and fact alone.
Remember again the source of this terrible, wonderous power you command. Words. Each one matters. Leave nuance to the poets. Yours must be as the solution to a mathematical problem. Each must be exactly right or all become wrong. For example, what transpired in that Colorado theatre was in no way, shape or form tragic. Abhorant, repugnant, deviant plus a hundred other descriptive words, yes. Tragic, no.
Remember always, with awesome power comes equally awesome responsibility. Responsibility is conjoined with culpability. It's imperative you recognize and address your own. Referring back to Colorado, this is a Pandora's box that you opened. It's up to you to take ownership, as well as corrective action, in regard to this sickest of phenomena. Please recognize that it is you that provide these sub - human perpetrators what they seek. You provide them unearned infamy. The prolonged, incessant nattering that ensues each despicable episode is the impetus for the next. Your making them, in their irreparably disturbed minds, legendary. In your misguided quest for the clinquant, you are creating monsters. I beseach you, cease and desist.
Give these malignant narcicists no quarter, no satisfaction, no motivation to persist. Give them what they so richly deserve should they be unwilling to distinguish themselves in appropriate fashion. Let them perish in the abject annonimity that their life choices prepaired them for. If you must report such incidents, do as you must. Simply delete in every possible way the doer. Never utter his name, never display his likeness, erase him in every possible way. Your cannons will find no offence and the next ones motivation is tacitly withdrawn.
