Douglas W. Scott

MENTOR — Douglas Wayne Scott, age 84, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Emeritus at Mentor, where he had been a resident for several years.

The son of William H. and Pauline (Klumpf) Scott, he was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Ashtabula, and was a graduate of Harbor High School. He worked for the Interlake Steamship Company for two years as a marine fireman.

Doug joined the United States Army in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1951. After returning to Ashtabula, he worked for several years as a carpenter; before joining Reliance Electric and working there for thirty plus years.

On Oct. 19, 1957, he married his beloved wife, Jean Deitz; and together they celebrated forty-eight years of marriage prior to her death on Dec. 25, 2005.

Doug enjoyed listening to classical and big band music; he was so knowledgeable that he could tell you the artist on hearing the title of the song and even sing a few bars. He loved to bowl and play golf, walk, and garden. He was a familiar sight in his neighborhood; walking every morning and evening. He enjoyed the art of good conversation; as he would say, it is all in the delivery and execution of the information.

Doug was a kind, nonjudgmental and encouraging person. He had lived with his diagnosis of Parkinson’s for fifteen years, never complaining, always encouraging and giving his love to others. His greatest joy was being a loving husband, dad, brother, and friend. His legacy will live on through his examples of living in his daily life.

He is survived by his children; son, Douglas (Leslie) Scott Jr. of Seabrook, Texas; a daughter, Sherri Fluhr (Peter) of Kirtland Hills, Ohio; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his brothers, William, Thomas and David; and his parents.

A Graveside Service celebrating Doug’s life will be held in the summer of 2013 at Saybrook Cemetery. The time and date will be announced.

If desired, contributions in Doug’s name may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119.
