SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — John “Vern” Howle, age 78, of North Ridge Road West, Saybrook Township, died Monday, August 30, 2010, at his home.

He was born July 7, 1932, in Darlington, S.C., the son of James Thomas and Annie Jane (Hill) Howle. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict and had been stationed in Germany.

He had been employed with the Ashtabula Car Ferry and then for Millenium Inorganic Chemicals for 30 years as a boiler operator until his retirement in 1998.

He was a member of the Saybrook United Methodist Church, the American Legion of Madison and a former member of the Ashtabula Rod and Gun Club.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the Indians and Cavs, going on cruises, woodworking and playing cards. He especially enjoyed his dog, “Pugsley”.

Surviving him are his wife, Nancy (Brown) Howle whom he married Feb. 13, 1954; two daughters, Holly Howle of Madison and Melissa (Bill) Sprague of Painesville; three sons, John (Becky) Howle of Allen, Texas, James Howle of Saybrook Township and Joel (Mary) Howle of Smyrna, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Tara, Shari, Michael, Benjamin, Ashlyn and Addison; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sylvia J. Rayburn of Tupelo, Miss. and Kay Hill Howle of Madison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a sister, Ruth Mountzouris.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4th, at the Geneva Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 323 S. Broadway, Geneva, Ohio, with the Rev. Jeffrey Stoll, of Saybrook United Methodist Church, officiating.

Calling Hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3rd, at the Funeral Home.
