MEMPHIS, Tenn. —
Stephen Frederick McHugh, age 61, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, in Memphis, Tenn.
He was born July 3, 1949, in Painesville, Ohio. He was a graduate Geneva High School in 1957 and Duquesne University in Pittsburg, Pa., and he received his graduate degree from Memphis State University.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Fisher Rosenlof and stepfather, Ted Rosenlof.
He leaves his wife of 22 years, Lauren Boggs McHugh; daughter, Katelyn Fisher; son, Matthew Sloan; and his older brother, Mike McHugh and sister-in-law, Diane from Grandbury, Texas. He also leaves his nephews, Jay (Dorothy), Shaun (Colleen), Zachary Williams and Whit Dean; niece, Garner Dean; grand-nieces, Megan, Shannon and Shae; grand-nephews, Jack and Patterson; sisters-in-law, Ashley Boggs Williams and Samantha Boggs Dean (Chris); mother-in-law, Charlotte Edge Boggs; stepmother-in-law, Wight Fulton Boggs; and stepbrothers-in-law, Alex and Fulton Boggs.
He taught school at Overton High School, Wooddale High, Bolton High and he retired from teaching at Arlington High in 2008.
He was a wonderful husband and father and was known for his quick wit, athleticism, optimism and fantastic attitude. He enjoyed golf, fishing, traveling and any activity being outdoors with his kids, especially in the mountains or on the beach. One of his favorite activities was watching his son’s sporting events and his daughter’s stage performances.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher. His passion was coaching, and he coached basketball, golf, softball, cross country and tennis at all levels from grade school to college where he was an encouragement to scores of students who later became good friends. His proudest coaching moments included coaching at Memphis State University, University of Minnesota and Christian Brothers University.
He played point guard in his years at Duquesne and led his team to two NCAA tournaments and the NIT. During his freshman year, his team was undefeated. As a high school player, he made the Ohio All State Basketball Team. In Ohio in 2008, he was inducted into the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Hall of Fame. He was the Regional Class AA Coach of the Year for softball at Overton High School and was also a finalist for the Memphis Commercial Appeal Class AA Coach of the Year. Most recently, he coached his son’s basketball team at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School, where both his children attend.
As a volunteer, he was involved in Kairos Prison Ministries, Memphis Athletic Ministries and he helped to feed the homeless through the Outpouring of God’s Love Ministry.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., TODAY, June 17th, in Seabrook Hall at Christ United Methodist Church, Memphis, Tenn. Funeral Service will be 3 p.m., Saturday, June 18th, at the Church.
