GENEVA —
Virginia “Ginny” Martin, age 97, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at The Sanctuary of Geneva in Geneva, Ohio.
She was born August 24, 1914, in Dover, Ohio, to Nellie (Walters) and Ernest Carson. Ginny graduated from Dover High School in 1933.
Following graduation, she worked as a dental assistant and a secretary. After a courtship that included many trips to the movie theater and ice cream parlor, she married Donald E. Martin on August 17, 1939, in Dover, Ohio. During World War II, Ginny worked for B. F. Goodrich, building rubber fuel liners in the wings of new airplanes.
She had a talent for baking delicious cookies, pies and apple dumplings. Ginny took pleasure in flower gardening, flower arranging and frequently shared flower bouquets with others. She was an avid reader, a talented seamstress and also enjoyed bird watching, drawing, painting, calligraphy, traveling and shopping for “a good bargain” at a garage sale.
Later in life, she along with her husband, regularly attended Saturday night ballroom dancing with couples that became lifelong friends. First and foremost, Ginny is remembered as a good mother. She was greatly loved not only by her family but by everyone who met her.
Ginny is survived by her husband of 73 years, Donald “Don” Martin of Geneva, Ohio; her children, Philip (Jeanne) Martin of Hudson, Ohio, Drs. Paul (Nancy) Martin of Lexington, Ohio and Kay (Widd) Raymond of Geneva, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Dr. David Martin; her parents; and brothers, Dale and Earl Carson.
A special thank you to the staff at The Sanctuary of Geneva and Harbor Light Hospice for the excellent care they provided Virginia at her time of need and for supporting her family.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army of Painesville and Lake County, 69 Pearl St., Painesville, Ohio 44077 or to The Sanctuary of Geneva, 200 Commerce Place, Geneva, Ohio 44041 for a flower garden in memory of Ginny Martin. Arrangements were completed by THE BEHM FAMILY FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, 175 S. Broadway, Geneva.
