MONROE TOWNSHIP — John A. Mononen, age 87, of Monroe Township, Ohio, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2013, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
He was born April 21, 1925, in Weirton, W.Va., the son of Esa and Fanny (Saari) Mononen. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was employed as a machine operator at the Conneaut G.E. Base Plant. A Lutheran by faith, John attended St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sheffield Township, and was a member of American Legion Cowle Post #151. He enjoyed traveling and spent a lot of time in Finland and Ireland. He had a great love for animals and cared for all that were dropped off at his home.
Survivors include his wife Jean (Boomhower) Mononen whom he married July 19, 1969; two nieces, Jean (Michael) Kulyk of North Ridgeville, Ohio and Linda (Tim) Resler of Fredericksburg, Va.; a nephew, Allan Mononen of Conneaut; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins in Finland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Oiva and Urpo; and a sister in infancy.
Calling Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.
Burial will be Tuesday, Feb. 19th, in East Conneaut Cemetery.
