Dominic A. Massucci

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Dominic Anthony Massucci, age 98, a lifelong resident of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Saybrook Landing.

He was born June 15, 1914, to Martin and Amelia Massucci. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Susan (Manupella).

Dominic was a 1933 graduate of Ashtabula High School, where he followed his brothers as an excellent athlete in several sports. He attended St. Michael’s College in Toronto, Canada, and the University of Detroit. At both institutions he also played football.

Throughout his life he had a fascination with electronics. Fostering that curiosity with his ability to assemble things, Dom built a radio as a young boy. He would tell his siblings that someday they’d be able to watch movies at home. His interest in science and technology became a common thread throughout his life.

During World War II, he served in Burma and India in the Army Air Corps as a radio technician. Being in his late 20s, he was called “Pops” by the much younger men with whom he served.

During his life, he had a variety of interesting jobs. He worked for his brother Louis at a Cities Service gas station. He later became a milkman for Sealtest and a TV repairman for Sears. At the same time, he owned and operated Ashtabula Sport Center (Massucci’s Sport Shop) with his sister, Jennie, and his brother, Art.

He was an ardent follower of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, as well as Ohio State. Later in life, Dom became an avid reader adapting to electronic books early on. He also developed an interest in word puzzles. Both of these pursuits kept him mentally sharp.

Dominic was a devout member of Mother of Sorrows Church where he spent countless hours volunteering to raise funds for the church and school, as well as athletic programs through the Shamrock Club.

Dominic was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his parents; four brothers, Michael, Frank, Arthur and Louis Massucci; and six sisters, Aussunta (Milano), Madeline (Fulk), Florence (Bruckman), Yolanda (Incorvia), Jennie and Mary Massucci.

He is survived by his sons, Gary and Donald, both of Ashtabula; as well as four generations of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 23rd, in Our Lady of Peace Parish, Mother of Sorrows Church. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday evening, March 22nd, from 5 to 7 p.m. at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19th St., Ashtabula.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve.

Arrangements by GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, Ashtabula. Obituary and condolences at starbeacon.com.
