JEFFERSON —
Steve A. Szalai, age 83, of Pierpont, Ohio, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Jefferson Healthcare Center, Jefferson, Ohio, where he had resided for the past 2 1/2 years.
He was born July 11, 1929, in Boyers, Pa., the son of Marton and Elizabeth (Naykas) Szalai and had resided in Monroe Township most of his life.
Mr. Szalai was employed with the Penn Central Railroad for several years and retired from Foseco (Exomet) in 1993 where he had been head of maintenance. Steve loved his children and especially his grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits on Sunday afternoon.
He was a charter member of the Monroe Athletic Club. Steve and his brothers, Martin, John, Mike and Danny bowled in the Brothers Bowling League in Erie, Pa. for many years, taking first place in 1973. He loved to cut and burn wood at his Middle Road home and raised beef cattle. He was happiest when riding one of his tractors or driving his pick-up truck listening to his polka music. After his retirement, another of Steve’s favorite pastimes was going to the Meadville Cattle Auction every Wednesday with his friend, Ed Peterson.
He is survived by his daughters, Diana Chike and Ginny (Rob Orr) McCall, both of Conneaut; his son, Steven Szalai of Monroe Township; grandchildren, Terri (Jim) Campbell, Andrea Szalai and Freddy McCall, all of Conneaut, Miriah Szalai and Ashley Szalai, both of Pierpont, Ohio, Stephanie (Shawn) Miranda of Wichita Falls, Texas, Josh Szalai of Athens, Ohio and Stephanie Campbell of Michigan; and great-grandchildren, Jonathon West, Howie Campbell and Eric Campbell, all of Conneaut and Emily Miranda and Callie Miranda, both of Wichita Falls, Texas with another great-granddaughter, Lillian, expected in late September of 2012. Also surviving are his sisters, Cheryl Sharp and Elizabeth Passmore, both of Conneaut; and his brothers, Michael (Bernice) Szalai and Dan (Mary) Szalai, both of Conneaut, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia (Gin) Szalai; his brothers, Martin Szalai and John Szalai; and three sisters, Peggy Smith, Suzie Tiche and Sophie Tiche.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 6th, at First United Congregational Church of Christ, Corner of Buffalo and Main Sts., with Pastor Joyce Shellhammer officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5th, at THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson Healthcare Activity Fund or Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Jefferson Healthcare for their loving care of our Papa over the past 2 1/2 years and Hospice of the Western Reserve.
