CONNEAUT —
Phyllis Mary Kirkwood, age 89, of High St., Conneaut, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Phyllis was born May 26, 1923, in Aliquippa, Pa., the daughter of the late Jacob and Blanche (Johnston) Figley.
She was a homemaker and also a child care provider for over 30 years. Her chocolate chip cookies were loved by all.
Mrs. Kirkwood was a lifelong member of the former East Conneaut United Methodist Church and now New Leaf United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Conneaut Moose Lodge where she served many steak dinners over the years. Phyllis belonged to the mother’s club for over 50 years and volunteered for various organizations. She was a member of the local TOPS Club for 21 years; where she had many dear friends and always enjoyed the trips to their yearly conventions. Phyllis enjoyed traveling and loved visiting her family and friends.
She will be greatly missed, yet proudly and fondly remembered as a wonderful woman with a huge heart, a contagious laugh and an endearing presence.
Phyllis is survived by two sons, Jon (Lyn) Kirkwood of Albuquerque, N.M. and Bill (Richard Hernandez) Kirkwood of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Cheryl (Robert) Devins of Lenexa, Kan. and Judy (Dave) Lewis of Pierpont, Ohio; grandchildren, Kevin (Melissa) Kirkwood of California, Sean (Janel) Devins of Olathe, Kan., Michael (Holly) Devins of Casper, Wyo., Dennis (Harmony) Brisley Jr. of Crossville, Tenn. and Lacey Lewis of Conneaut, Ohio; step-grandchildren, Melissa (Stephen) Hutchinson of Phoenix, Ariz., Nick Barbaro of Albuquerque, N.M., Michelle Kilabrew of Albuquerque, N.M. and Lorrie (Buddie) Litwiler of Conneaut, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Ella Devins; three step-great-grandchildren, Lawren Litwiler and Ashlyn and Brianna Hutchinson; one sister-in-law, Audrey Vasti of Conneaut; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harry Kirkwood Jr.; three brothers, Howard, Harold and Kenneth Figley; three sisters, Elinor Archer, Marian Cable and Jean (McCartney) Cole; and one grandson, Jon Kirkwood Jr.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, July 13th, at New Leaf United Methodist Church, corner of Buffalo and Madison Sts., Conneaut, with Pastor Jan Walsh officiating. Burial will follow at East Conneaut Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 12th, at THOMPSON-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut and at the Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of Services.
Should friends desire, memorials in Phyllis’ name may be given in her honor to New Leaf United Methodist Church, 283 Buffalo St., Conneaut or Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
