LANSING, Mich. — Lt. Colonel William C. Roege Jr., USA Ret., age 84, of East Lansing, Mich., died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009.


He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, August 30, 1925, the son of the late William C. and Sylvia (Maenpa) Roege and grandson of Frans M. and Alma E. (Sihto) Maenpa of Ashtabula. In 1948, he married the former Esther F. Hoffman of Cincinnati, Ohio. She preceded him in death Sept. 23, 2001.


Mr. Roege graduated as a civil engineer from Ohio State University in 1949. Activated from the Army Reserve to active duty in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 1950, he served in various locations during the Korean Conflict. Returning to reserve duty in 1952, he joined Commonwealth Power as a design engineer until 1961. He then held several other engineering positions before working for the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency as a consulting engineer. Later, he was asked to join the State Office of Management and Budget, Facilities Division, from which he retired in 1984. Earning a Master’s degree in Public Administration, Mr. Roege then worked with Public Sector Consultants, Inc.


An avid hunter, fisherman and handgun competitor, he was active for many years in the Capital City Rifle Club.


Mr. Roege is survived by his sister, Kathleen E. (Loyal) Luikart of Euclid, Ohio; his three children, William H. (Margaret) of Fairfax Station, Va., Paul E. (Gayle) of Williamsburg, Va., and Kristina E. Roege Wilson of Dimondale, Mich.; and four grandchildren, Caroline (David Crockett), Diane (Jeremy Hall), Kathryn (Kyle Rommel) and Jacob. Local survivors are cousins, Kristina (John) Carpenter, Dr. Frank (Diane) Maenpa of Ashtabula and Jon (Merry Lee) Brady of Conneaut.
