ASHTABULA — Carl James Mazzola, age 87, of Ashtabula, Ohio, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at the Country Club Retirement Center Campus, surrounded by family and friends.


He was born April 16, 1922, in Ashtabula, the son of the late Louis A. and Edith (Palumbo) Mazzola.


He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1942 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in Oct. 1942, where his military duties were as a medic in the Western European Theater at Normandy (June 6, 1944) and in Central Europe as well. As a medic at Omaha Beach, he aided the wounded and carried the dead from the battlefield. Decorations and Citations include the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater with one Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. His duty was completed in Feb. of 1946.


In April 1947, Carl married Edith DeGeorge, who survives. Earlier this year, Carl and Edith celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.


Mr. Mazzola worked in Ashtabula with the New York Central Railroad for a number of years before being employed by Rockwell International for over 25 years until retirement.


Carl’s favorite pastime was golf and he continued to play the game until he could no longer walk. A member of Knights of Columbus #360 and Mother of Sorrows Parish, Carl was active in church community affairs. He and Edith would prepare and serve dinners at the MDM St. Joseph Mission on West Ave. for benefit occasions. In 2004, the Mazzola family was named “Family of the Year” by the Knights of Columbus in Ashtabula.


Carl is survived by his wife, Edith; two sons, Lou (Laurie) Mazzola of Erie, Colo. and David Mazzola of Dallas, Tex.; a daughter, Ann (Pat) McDonald of The Colony, Texas; grandsons, David Jacob and Alex Joseph Mazzola, of New Jersey and Colorado.


He was preceded in death by his parents; an older stillborn brother, Anthony in 1920; his twin brother, Pat (Pasquale) in 1986; and younger brother, Richard in 1999.


Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 2nd, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.


Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 W. 19th St., Ashtabula.
