TRUMBULL TOWNSHIP — Philip E. Hines, age 79, of Trumbull Township, Ohio, died early Monday morning, Oct. 26, 2009.
Phil was born July 1, 1930, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Russell and Beatrice Hines.
Phil was a talented man of many trades. As an outdoorsman and wildlife lover, Phil has raised many animals from mink to sheep. Most recently, Phil built an eight acre wildlife preserve, at his home and estate in Trumbull Township. It has been a sanctuary for many Ohio birds, fish and aquatic plants.
Phil’s talents and abilities were numerous. He has painted pictures of wildlife and made woodcarvings of animals, as well as toys for his grandchildren. Also music was a passion of Phil’s. He was a musician and guitar maker.
Phil was a carpenter and construction supervisor by trade. He had been involved in projects all over America. When you drive by a house or old gas station circa 1960’s and early 70’s in northeast Ohio, it might just have been built by Phil.
Phil’s most recent project was building a vintage Piper Club airplane from scratch. He was a licensed private pilot and had a passion for aviation. He had flown all over the skies of Ohio, taking flight from his airstrip in Trumbull Township.
Besides his large family, which he loved and cherished everyday, Phil was a devote Christian. He served as Youth Leader at the Grant Way Assembly of God in Tucson, Ariz., and served as minister at a homeless men’s shelter.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married on Oct. 16, 1948, in Corinth, Ohio; sons, Gary (Tina Pekarski) Hines of Geneva and Dennis (Linda DeGeorge) Hines of Ashtabula; daughters, Jeanne (Samuel) Myers of Trumbull Township, Joyce (Randy) Phillips of Perry and Phyllis (Robert) Wilcox of Trumbull Township; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Nadine Conn; brothers, Larry, Dale, Denny and David Hines; and beloved dogs, “Smoky and Tiny.”
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dean.
Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29th, at the WALKER FUNERAL HOME, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, with the Rev. Brian Wright, of the Faith Community Church of Trumbull Township, officiating.
Calling Hours will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the Hartsgrove Cemetery, Hartsgrove Township.
Contributions may be made to the Geneva First United Methodist Church Relay for Life.
