ASHTABULA — Maynard Paul Meaney, age 86, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at UH-Conneaut Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born April 8, 1926, in Ashtabula, the son of Leo and Elizabeth (Morgan) Meaney. A 1944 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he was a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married the love of his life, Mae Helm, on Sept. 30, 1950.
Maynard retired from the Ashtabula City Fire Department after 29 years of proud service and also worked for the Coca-Cola Company for 42 years, full and part-time.
A member of the VFW Post #943, the American Legion, Post #103, and the East Ashtabula Club, Maynard was also a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and continued to support the church even after he was no longer able to attend. His interests included golf, trips to Rod Hunt’s Pennsylvania hunting cabin, watching Notre Dame and Ohio State football games, and family meetings in his rose garden. A sports enthusiast, Maynard liked watching the LPGA and women’s beach volleyball. Maynard also liked watching “The Price Is Right”, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”.
His survivors include five children, Cindy (Dale) Meaney-Massai of Granville, Mass., Jeffrey P. Meaney and Michael P. (Juli) Meaney, both of Ashtabula, and Laurie K. (Bill Wiser) Meaney and Roberta H. (Brian) Winston, both of Conneaut; seven grandchildren, Michael, Drew, Joe, Kelly, Maggie, Sarah and Kathleen; two great-grandchildren, Gabby and Rylee; two sisters, Margaret Martin and Mary Sholtis; two brothers, Lawrence and Robert Meaney; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae (Helm) Meaney on April 8, 1994; one grandson, Patrick Winston; three sisters, Georgiana, Ruth and Gertrude; and one brother, Edward.
Calling Hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m., TODAY, Dec. 30th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 31st, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Worship Site, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Raymond Thomas will preside. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by American Legion, Dewey-Howlett Post #103.
Maynard enjoyed visits from “Lucy” a lab mix adopted from the Ashtabula Animal Protective League.
