COLUMBUS —
Melvin L. "Mel" Olix, M.D., age 84, passed away at the Forum, Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and Frank; and sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Jack Davis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean; children, Marianne and Dale Williams of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Peggy and Barney Benkelman of Helena, Mont., Gary Olix of Upper Arlington and Tom and Susan Olix of Upper Arlington; niece, Kathy Davis O'Connell of Harpersfield, Ohio; grandchildren, Keely Williams of New Orleans, Dale Williams III of Charlotte, N.C., Charles Williams of New Orleans, Neil Benkelman of Portland, Ore., Grant Benkelman of Helena, Louise Benkelman of Helena and Dan Olix and Jenny Olix, both of Upper Arlington.
Mel was born on April 11, 1928 in Ashtabula, Ohio. He graduated from Ashtabula H.S and was a 1950 graduate of Miami University where he played quarterback for the Redskins from 1946-1949, under Sid Gilman and was inducted into Miami’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1971.
Selected as one of Miami's all time Gridiron Greats, Mel led Miami to victory in the Sun Bowl, he was all-Ohio, all Mac, honorable mention all-America and played in the Blue-Gray Classic. He was drafted in 1950 by the Eagles, but chose to pursue a career in medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He completed his internship and residency in orthopedics at The Ohio State University during 1954-1961. He was a Capt. in the U.S Air force from 1955-1957.
Mel practiced Orthopedic Surgery in Columbus for 35 years, was the O.S.U team physician, clinical associate professor at O.S.U., and consultant to the N.F.L. as an orthopedist. He was a founding member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, The Clinical Orthopedic Society, The American College of Sports Medicine, Ohio Orthopedic Society, Columbus Orthopedic Society and American College of Surgeons.
Calling Hours for loving friends and family will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 22nd, at EGAN-RYAN NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 4661 Kenny Road, Columbus.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m., Monday, July 23rd, at St. Brendan Catholic Church, 4475 Dublin Road, Hilliard. Entombment to follow at Union Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Mel's honor to the Parkinson’s Foundation or charity of your choice.
