AIKEN, S.C. —
Barbara W. Cordell, formerly of Ashtabula, passed away peacefully at the Harbor Chase Memory Care facility in Aiken, S.C. on Thursday, June 14, 2012, following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Barbara was born in Ashtabula on Oct. 7, 1927, to Theodore E. and Ada (Edsell) Warren. After college, she returned to northeast Ohio to become a teacher.
She taught at Mayfield Road School in Mayfield, Ohio and at Washington School in Ashtabula.
Barbara married James L. Cordell on August 23, 1952. After his second tour serving in the United States Navy, they returned to Ashtabula in 1956 to raise their growing family. While Jim was with the Ashtabula Bow Socket, they moved to Auburn, Ind. in 1961 and to Bloomfield Hills, Mich. in 1966, returning to Ashtabula in 1969. She and Jim built a retirement home in Aiken, S.C. in 1990 and moved seasonally between Ashtabula and Aiken until 2010, when they became permanent residents of South Carolina.

For several years, she was the Bridal Registrar with Carlisle’s at the Ashtabula Main Ave. store, and also co-owned the William Smith & Son Monument Company with her son, Bradford, from 1984-2000.
In Aiken, she was a Master Gardener and a member of the South Aiken Presbyterian Church, Woodside Plantation Country Club and The Garden Club of Aiken, recently being bestowed the honor of being elected an Honorary Lifetime Member. Barbara loved to garden and was well known as a gifted knitter, creating many beautiful sweaters for her family. She also did needlepoint, cross stitch and owned her own loom and wove.
She enjoyed golf and loved to travel. Barbara visited most of the states in the United States, many of the countries in the Caribbean and in Europe, as well as Russia, Egypt, and had a memorable cruise through the Panama Canal.
